Food sensitivities

Are you getting symptoms of bloating, stomach pain, rashes, even a flare-up of an existing condition such as eczema, dermatitis or even an auto-immune disease? Do you find you constantly have to watch what you eat?

Have you tried an loss protocol, a paleo diet, eliminated all packaged foods, wheat or gluten, complete food groups and still feel like your body is reacting to certain foods that you’re unable to pinpoint? Or has it all been too overwhelming and confusing so you’re not sure what to do first? Did you know that in the last decade, food allergies have increased 10 fold amongst children in Australia and major food sensitivities in adults are continuing to grow; with the main culprits being soy, corn, cereals (like wheat), dairy, legumes, eggs and even coconut is a growing sensitivity.

Let’s look at this issue deeper

For millions of years, we’ve eaten real foods and the human species have had to survive; times of drought, famine, weather and seasonal influences.  Food and humans have evolved together. However, now the world is becoming more hostile towards the health of humans and the generations that are passing are not coping, adapting or becoming as robust as our environment continues to change.

Changing Habits believes in a vitalistic approach to health, well-being and lifestyle by empowering, educating and helping to guide thousands of people to begin making sustainable and long lasting changes to the health of themselves and of their families. We truly believe that our bodies have the amazing ability to heal itself given the right conditions and tools.

Definitions of intolerances, allergies and sensitivities

Intolerance is usually when someone is unable to digest a food due to the lack of an enzyme. A good example of this is a milk intolerance which usually results when the body lacks the enzyme lactase to digest the milk protein lactose.  Interestingly raw milk has lactase, pasteurised milk has no lactase.

An allergy is an overreaction by the immune system to a normally harmless substance which is then termed an allergen. Allergens can enter the body via food, inhalation, the skin or injection. Common symptoms include hives, rashes, itching, sneezing and stuffy nose.  A diagnosis of an allergy depends on the one line of defence – IgE. One in three Australians will experience an allergic reaction.

A sensitivity is very similar to an allergy where the immune system overreacts to an allergen; but even though there is some immunological response, the antigen IgA is not produced in the reaction. Despite the body not mounting an immune response based on IgE it may use another armed force such as IgA or IgG, but current allergy tests do not consider other Ig factors as an allergy and therefore will not call it an allergy.  Most food and chemical reactions are therefore termed

The antecedents of life are the choices you make in life and the things that happen to you as a result of parents or predicaments. These are things that make a difference to the overall health of the individual.  Coupled with that, the microbiome that is passed from one generation to the next is now weakening, as well as the genetic potential we have as humans and we see a slow loss in our robustness.

Other contributing factors may include:

  • Some of us weren’t breast fed
  • Born by C section
  • Consuming a diet high in processed and inflammatory foods full of dubious ingredients
  • Medications are taken to dull the signs and signals of the body
  • We’re also exposed to 000’s of chemicals. This is not just one generation but several generations.
  • Heavy metal exposure
  • Poor gut health and leaky gut
  • Life events
  • Stress

The problem is how do we know what will determine success or issues?

What can help?

While what you eat is part of your environment, it’s important to look at other aspects as well to help heal the body and boost the body’s immunity and intelligence such as;

  • Focus on a chemical free environment by reducing your toxic load – look at your personal care and cleaning products
  • Support your immune system with chemical free foods from nature
  • Good quality sleep
  • Avoidance of packaged foods containing preservatives, colours, flavours, fillers and other dubious ingredients you can’t pronounce or recognise
  • Avoidance of manipulated foods such as skimmed fat products, refined oils and flours etc.
  • Try to create a calm and safe environment free from emotional stress
  • Working on replenishing the good bacteria in your gut with homemade ferments
  • Undertake our 21 Step Reset Program, Hunter Gatherer Protocol or 4 Phase Fat Elimination Protocol

“I was really bloated and my ongoing dermatitis was extremely inflamed and I really felt as though I needed a fresh start. I embarked on the 4 Phase Fat Elimination Protocol, I was warned it was going to be tough but I wanted to reap the benefits so badly for myself that I was willing to step up to the challenge. Its something I feel that everyone should do at least once in their life. I learnt so much about how my body reacts to certain foods and now 6 months on there is things I would just never touch. Everyone is so different and I think the protocol really captures that. My skin has never been better and has not once looked like going back to its old ways and the mental clarity by the end of the protocol is astounding.”

Where to from here?

Chances are that if you are suffering from food allergies, intolerances or sensitivities, you will need additional support and guidance along the way. There are many things that can help or hinder your healing, so our nutritionists at Changing Habits are also here to help you on your path to better health and well-being.

When we begin to want to change our life, there are many different points to start from. Some begin with diet while others may go to movement, chiropractic care, spirituality or a change of job. To determine where each person is can be hard, even with the best of functional testing. To know exactly what to do for each individual is not a science but rather a trial and error for the most part.

Changing Habits recommends that if you are someone who has been in an environment that is not conducive to being robust and adapting to the environment or even a hostile environment for the body by being around lots of chemicals, heavy metals, not moving and eating the SAD (Standard Australian Diet) based on breakfast cereals, low fat milk, bread with margarine, plastic cheese on toast and microwave meals, then we advise to begin with the Changing Habits 21 Step Reset Program. By starting with this you can begin to clean up your food and environment and your body will begin to cleanse and heal itself.

Once the 21 Step Reset Program has been mastered, we recommend the Changing Habits Hunter Gatherer Protocol or the 4 Phase Fat Elimination Protocol. Both of these protocols have been designed to eliminate foods out of your diet and slowly re-introduce foods back into your diet to see which foods cause ill health or vitality, vibrancy and mental clarity.

For those who believe they have done everything but diet is just not working, I beseech you to look further afield than just diet.  We are here to guide and help, but other interventions or other aspects of health may need to be sought out.
