Our story… why we source and supply Chia Seeds

Due to their wonderful Omega 3 properties and versatility, Cyndi began looking for a local source of chia seeds in recent years, but realised that sometimes there is a reason food has a native home – when we don’t have all the right environmental factors, the seed may not be as nutritionally dense as those grown in their native habitat.  Changing Habits organic Chia Seeds are sustainably grown in Mexico at high altitude, in rich, fertile volcanic soil with a mineral rich water supply.

History of Chia Seeds

Chia (Salvia Hispanica) comes from the Mayan word meaning strength and these tiny seeds are nutrition packed. Legend has it that the Aztecs and Mayans used chia seeds to fuel performance and seen as a survival food as well as a food for generations to thrive. It’s not hard to see why. When we look at the nutritional profile, 16g/100g protein with a balance amino acid profile, over 30g/100g fibre 26g of which is insoluble fibre which has been shown to be beneficial to gut health, over 21g/100g Omega 3 ALA essential fatty acids, plus many minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc.

Our Chia Seeds story

At Changing Habits we pride ourselves with FOSET (Foods; organic, sustainable, ethical and trusted).  Sometimes it takes us years to find the right food that fit the criteria.

Many years ago we began looking for a local source of chia, but realised that sometimes there is a reason food has a native home – when we don’t have all the right environmental factors, the seed may not be as nutritionally dense as those grown in their native habitat.

Changing Habits organic Chia Seeds are sustainably grown in Mexico using a traditional farmer cooperative method. Grown in an area known as the land of “eternal spring”, the fertile volcanic soil and mineral rich water from the surrounding mountains ensures a nutrient dense crop. Our chia seeds also have a high oil content, due to be being grown at high altitudes – 1,800m above sea level.

The nutritional value of the seed lies in the fatty acid profile, over 26% essential fatty acid with over 20 % omega 3 is within this tiny nutritious seed.  This is an amazing seed to include in your diet to increase your dietary intake of essential fatty acids, amino acids and prebiotics.

Chia seeds contain natural antioxidants which protects the sensitive fats in the seeds from going rancid, protecting the nutrients and giving the chia seeds a naturally long shelf life.

Due to the high fibre content of chia seeds, they absorb up to 10 times their own weight in water so they can be used in cooking to replace eggs which is beneficial for vegans and those with egg intolerances.

The carbohydrates in chia seeds are predominantly fibre. They contain both soluble and insoluble fibre which are both important for gut health. Insoluble fibre makes up around 80 per cent of the fibre in chia seeds. This adds bulk to the diet and can help regulate bowel movements and manage constipation.
